If you live in or near Missouri, you live in one of the most seismically-active places in America. Want proof? The United States Geological Survey has confirmed that there have already been 177 New Madrid quakes in 2024 so far and that's a conservative count.

The USGS is constantly updating their earthquake page with data from around the world. I have seen a bit of an uptick in New Madrid Seismic Area activity recently and asked their database to do a count for me of the measurable quakes in 2024 from January 1 until the day of this writing which is July 18. Here's what the map looks like of all the shakers that have been confirmed along the fault region in 2024.

Many of these have been reported felt by dozens of people including the largest of 2024 so far.

The 3.8 magnitude quake on May 16 is by far the largest New Madrid quake that's been felt in Missouri in 2024. It was felt by hundreds that day.

As we're now past the halfway mark of 2024, it's been an interesting year along the New Madrid Fault averaging nearly an earthquake per day. Still, this isn't really out of the ordinary compared to previous years at this point.

Missouri State Emergency Management estimates (according to USGS data) that there is a 7 to 10% chance of a mammoth quake of greater than 7.5 and a a 25–40% chance of a 6.0–7.0 magnitude earthquake in the next 50 years.

You can keep tabs on the New Madrid Seismic Area yourself anytime you're curious through the USGS earthquake site.
