A Rare and Odd Earthquake Just Shook Bull Shoals Lake in Missouri
Southern Missouri is one of the most seismically-active areas in America, so it's not strange for earthquakes to happen in that region. They happen all the time, but I cannot remember one centered in Bull Shoals Lake in Missouri like the one that just hit late Saturday night.
The USGS has confirmed that the southern border of Missouri had an earthquake Saturday night centered in Bull Shoals Lake at around 11:30pm local time.
But wait, there's more
This quake was not a lone shaker. Two other strange quakes were confirmed further south in Arkansas around the same time period.
The timing of these 3 southern Missouri and northern Arkansas quakes is interesting as just a few days ago, there was a mini-swarm of earthquakes that hit the New Madrid Seismic Zone. I've done some digging and can't find any other minor faults in Arkansas that could be responsible for the late Saturday night Bull Shoals Lake quake, so it must be New Madrid activity albeit to the west of the usual region.
There's no reason for alarm as this does not necessarily mean the region is warming up for a bigger seismic event. It's just something out of the ordinary compared to what we normally see with New Madrid Seismic Zone activity.
