The Hannibal Police Department is warning residents of a phone scam involving a subject impersonating a police officer.

In a press release to the media on Monday, March 3rd, HPD says they have been notified of calls, messages, and emails from subjects impersonating a police officer or federal employee.

Scammers are telling victims that they have warrants in their name for failure to appear at a court date, often for jury duty. The HPD says the phone numbers seem to be associated with local police agencies, and scammers may also send documents that appear official.

The Hannibal Police Department wants to remind residents that police officers will never solicit payment from individuals over the phone.

If You Receive a Scam Call

If you receive a scam call, remember — do not feel pressured to act. Scammers use urgency to trick you into providing your information. Never give your personal information out over the phone.

Police officers will never demand payment by phone, and you should never give out your credit card information.

Finally, tell others — whether it's police, family members, or friends — so they can help protect you and spread awareness.
