Strange Swarm of Earthquakes Near Bull Shoals Lake in Missouri?
We're only days into 2024 and already strange geological things are happening in and near Missouri. This is one of them. A mini-swarm of earthquakes were reported overnight near Bull Shoals Lake.
I check the USGS earthquake page daily and it's not unusual to see the occasional tiny New Madrid quake in Missouri, but I cannot ever remember seeing them along the edges of Bull Shoals Lake. For the record, Bull Shoals Lake is known for epic fishing, but not earthquakes. Here are 3 New Madrid quakes that were just recorded along Bull Shoals Lake overnight alone. Over the past week, Bull Shoals Lake in both Missouri and Arkansas has had 5 quakes!
They weren't that tiny either. All were stronger than 2.2 in magnitude which is not even considered a moderate earthquake, but still unusual in a swarm in this part of the Missouri/Arkansas border region.
If you zoom into the USGS shake map, you'll see they were all centered along one of the little inlets of Bull Shoals Lake.
As of this writing, there are no reports that anyone felt these minor shakes in Missouri or Arkansas and that's not surprising.
But wait, there's more
I will now be paying special attention to geological activity in this part of Missouri. It's certainly not common to see quakes there and a sudden uptick along Bull Shoals Lake (of all places) is something to keep your eyes on in case the New Madrid Fault is warming up for a major 2024 event.
