This was no minor earthquake that hit the New Madrid Fault Zone in Missouri early Thursday morning. So far, it's the largest quake along this seismically-active part of Missouri in 2024.

The USGS reports that this earthquake struck at approximately 3:19am in the early morning hours of Thursday waking up hundreds of Missouri who reported feeling it.

Fortunately, there is no damage being reported as of this writing. A 3.8 earthquake is considered moderate and will not normally damage buildings, but it certainly did wake up many in the bootheel of Missouri early Thursday morning.

The irony is that just a couple days ago I was mentioning how quiet the New Madrid Fault had been for the past week. This certainly was a healthy release of energy.

UPDATE: 5/16/24 - 11:42am

The initial New Madrid quake today has now become a swarm of 4.
