Pike County Sheriff David Greenwood says deputies went to a rural Nebo residence Tuesday to contact 31 year old Kyle Smith.

When deputies arrived, Smith went out the rear of the home and drove away. A chase ensued, down a rural lane and into a bean field.

After Smith’s vehicle stopped due to apparent mechanical failure, the pursuit continued on foot. Deputies used an electronic control device to take Smith into custody.

Along with an active Pike County warrant, Smith was initially charged with fleeing to attempt to elude police, resisting arrest and criminal damage to property. He was later charged with failure to register as a sex offender, providing false information by a sex offender and obstruction of justice.

Smith is in the Pike County Jail on $105,000 bond.
