Another long holiday weekend results in more traffic deaths on Missouri highways.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that nine motorists died on the state’s roadway during the New Year’s holiday weekend.

Five of the fatalities happened in the St. Louis area, with two in the St. Joseph area and one each in the Lee’s Summitt and Poplar Bluff areas.

As was the case over the Christmas holiday, there were no traffic deaths in northeast Missouri.

Over the weekend, troopers investigated 344 traffic crashes with 116 injuries and made 90 DWI arrests.

The extended New Year’s weekend ran from 6 p.m. Wednesday through midnight Sunday.
