February was a bad month on Missouri highways.
MODOT says traffic crashes claimed 63 lives in February according to preliminary totals. That follows a five year low for traffic deaths in January. There were 12 days in February with three or more fatalities including six deaths on Super Bowl Sunday.   Preliminary stats also show that 72 percent of drivers and passengers killed in January and February were not wearing seat belts. MODOT officials say excessive speed, aggression, distraction and impairment remain as the leading causes of traffic deaths on Missouri highways.. Highway Patrol troopers report a total of 877 fatalities on Missouri highways last year and more than 36-thousand highway deaths nationwide.
