Counterfeit currency is making the rounds in Monroe City.

Monroe City Police reports counterfeit bills that have shown up in businesses show up as a real bill with a marker.

Police say merchants should be especially thorough in checking currency, including checking the holograph on the bill, looking for the security thread and microprinting, using the detection marker and checking number duplicates.

Some of the bills that showed up in Monroe City were ten-dollars bills that had been disguised as 100-dollar bills (pictured).

If you come across a bill you believe may be questionable, please call your local law enforcement agency.
