An organization dedicated to helping area communities and non-profit agencies handed out nearly a quarter-million dollars in grant money Tuesday.

At an open house, the Community Foundation Serving West Central Illinois and Northeast Missouri handed out over $239,000 in grants, benefiting some 55 area non-profit organizations.

The money comes from nearly 200 separate endowment funds, set up by individuals, families and businesses and administered by the foundation.

The grants handed out ranged from $86 to $200,000.

The agencies benefiting from the grants literally span the alphabet, ranging from the Alzheimer’s Association and the American Red Cross to the YWCA and Zion Lutheran Church.

The final round of grants for year brings the total for the year to a record $1.6-million dollars.
