Additional flood protection means the end for planters on top of the Hannibal Flood Wall.
Hannibal’s emergency management officials decided to remove the decorative planters and add additional height to the flood wall. Emergency Management Director John Hark says they want the best defense that is possible against high water. The flood wall was completed in early 1993. The current top of the flood wall is at 34 feet. Flood stage is 16 feet. The record crest for the Mississippi River at Hannibal is 31.8 feet on July 15 of 1993. Sandbags and free board were added temporarily to the top of the flood wall in 1993 and again in 2019.
