A western Illinois man charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with a shooting death near Quincy has pleaded not guilty.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reports that 21-year-old Zachary Ballinger entered the not-guilty plea in Adams County after waiving his right to a preliminary hearing.

Authorities say 21-year-old Austin Hermann was shot and killed early on the morning of March 23 at a home just outside of Quincy. His body was found on a porch. Ballinger was arrested at the scene.

The county's sheriff and state's attorney haven't divulged what may have led to the shooting.

Ballinger also is charged with possessing marijuana with plans to sell it.

His trial is tentatively scheduled to begin Aug. 11.

Ballinger is free on bond.
