If you aren't an earthquake nerd like I am, you likely didn't even notice what's been happening along the New Madrid Seismic Zone near Missouri over the past few days. There's a sudden swarm of 8 measurable quakes that have been confirmed by the USGS.

Anytime I see earthquakes in bunches along the New Madrid Fault, I get interested. That's exactly what has happened just over the past 5 or 6 days. This is what the hazard map looks like from the USGS.

This is a little bit of a change compared to recent activity that has been very close to New Madrid, Missouri itself. 5 of the 8 quakes over the past few days have been in north-central Arkansas just north of Bald Knob.

All things considered there's really nothing I'm seeing about this brief uptick of New Madrid earthquakes to be particularly concerning at all. It's just another interesting twist in seismic activity along Missouri's southern border.

It's a good idea to keep an eye on what the New Madrid Fault is doing as I saw the USGS has now upped the likelihood of a 6 magnitude or greater quake there to 25 to 40% within the next 50 years. There remains only a 7 to 10% chance of a greater than 7 magnitude New Madrid earthquake.
