I've been in and around St. Louis, Missouri many times in my life although I've never lived there. I've never personally felt in danger and actually have met some great and interesting people there. In some of the poorest neighborhoods, many are not there because they choose to be, but they were either born there and haven't been able to find a way out or ended up there. I'm not in denial that criminals thrive in some of these places, but I believe that many are there just doing what they think they need to do to survive.

Whenever I've gone to a nighttime Cardinals game, I get in and out of the city as quickly and efficiently as possible. I stay away from some of these more dangerous places, but I don't assume that all that walk these streets at night are looking for trouble. My dad told me early in life to never judge anyone until you've walked a mile in their shoes. Frankly, I'm not sure I'm brave enough to have to deal with what these St. Louis, Missouri people do every day of their lives. Just like the Van Halen song says, there are mean streets there.
