When I was a kid, my dad gave me the choice of collecting stamps or coins and I chose stamps. I did not choose wisely. (Sorry, Indiana Jones) Maybe you made the right choice and collected coins. If so, have you heard of the 1894-S Barber Dimes? Wikipedia says only 24 of these rare dimes were ever minted which makes them worth a fortune.

Here are the last 5 auctions for 1894-S Barber Dimes:

  • $825,000
  • $1,035,000
  • $1.3 million
  • $1.9 million
  • $1,997,500

Here's what one of these dimes looks like. This is the last one that sold for $1,997,500 according to Coin Week.

That last auction happened in Chicago, by the way. Here's the kicker...it's believed that one of these rare dimes very well could be in Missouri...somewhere. Is it sitting in a grandpa's piggy bank with the owner unaware of the riches that are in their possession?

I had something like this happen when I was a kid. I collected baseball cards. My dad saw a box at an old house auction in Missouri and bought all of them for $10. It turned out they were 1951 Bowman cards with a rookie Willie Mays and a rookie Mickie Mantle both worth thousands of dollars.

Check your dimes. You seriously have no idea of one of these rare beauties is sitting in your attic somewhere. It's going to happen to someone. How great would it be if it's you?
