Marion County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating another phone scam.

The complainant says they received a call from a male stating that he was an officer with the sheriff’s department and using a fictitious name. The complainant was threatened with issuance of an arrest warrant if an undisclosed amount of money was not paid.  The caller I-D displayed one of the Marion County Sheriff’s Department numbers. An investigation determined the actual phone had been spoofed and used with a fictitious number overseas.

The Marion County Sheriff’s office says law enforcement does not collect money this way. If caller I-D shows your local law enforcement agency’s number, immediately call that agency back and attempt to confirm that an officer called.
