A phone scam that has been around for a while is again making the rounds in the area.

Pike County, Illinois Sheriff David Greenwood reports his office has gotten several complaints recently of someone getting a call from a person identifying themselves as a grandchild or other young family member.

The caller says they are in trouble, usually involving a vehicle crash or traffic stop and they need money sent to them to get them out of jail.

Most of the time the caller actually uses the name of the loved one.
Sheriff Greenwood says this is a common scam, preying mostly on senior citizens.

If you receive one of these calls, do not send money, then contact the Sheriff’s office at 217-285-5011 to report the scam or to confirm whether your loved one has been incarcerated.
