The 12 Team College Football Playoff is BAD for Notre Dame
If you missed the news last week, the College Football Playoff has announced their seeding for their new 12-team format and it is BAD news for the Fighting Irish from Notre Dame...Here is why.
If you don't want to READ my opinion on why the 12-team playoff is bad for Notre Dame, you can listen to my opinion here...
If you are still here with me, then I will try to lay it out simply and concisely.
The ONLY way you can get a top 4 seed in the new 12-team playoff format is to WIN your conference and be highly ranked. The top 4 ranked conference winners will get the 1, 2, 3, and 4 seeds in the playoff, those seeds will get a BYE in the 1st round of the playoff. That bye is extremely valuable. and Notre Dame WON'T get one because they are NOT part of a conference, Notre Dame should join the Big 10 ASAP!
On the website for the College Football Playoff, they say...
"Under the 12-team playoff format that begins this fall, the four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and each will receive a first-round bye, while teams seeded five through 12 will play each other in the first round on the home field of the higher-ranked team."
What is interesting is that the teams who end up in the 5, 6, 7, and 8, seeds will be the only teams that GET a home playoff game. So Notre Dame could be undefeated and ranked #1 at the end of the season next year, and they will end up the #5 seed with a home playoff game. That is the best Notre Dame can hope for in their current independent standing.
Also, Clemson, Baylor, and other big-time ACC & Big 12 schools are in luck! They have no reason to join the Big 10 or the SEC because they can win their easier conference and end up with a 1st round bye, over a better one or two-loss Big 10/SEC school that didn't win their conference regardless of ranking.
