A Canton man has been charged in connection with the shooting death of his step father Thursday night.

Lewis County Sheriff David Parrish reports that deputies were called to a residence on Old Monticello Road in Canton at 10:15 p.m. Thursday on a report of a shooting.

Deputies arrived to find the body of 56-year-old David Brooks, who appeared to have died from a gunshot wound to the chest from a large caliber handgun.

Brooks was pronounced dead by Lewis County Coroner Larry Arnold just before 11 p.m. An autopsy is pending.

An investigation led to the arrest of Brooks’ stepson, 19-year-old Cody Wilson.

Wilson has been formally charged with murder in the first degree and armed criminal action.

Wilson is in the Lewis County Jail on a $1 million bond.
