A rapid rise in the Mississippi River results in all five downtown Hannibal flood gates to be installed Monday afternoon.

All the gates are put in when the National Weather Service forecasts a river level of at least 21.5 feet. The midday Monday forecast calls for the Mississippi at Hannibal to rise to 25.4 feet by Tuesday, July 9th. The weather service also says additional rises are possible thereafter.

Hannibal Emergency Services Director John Hark says heavy rains Sunday and the forecast for more Monday in Minnesota and Wisconsin is the reason for the forecasts.

Flood warnings have been posted and minor to moderate flooding is predicted from Lock and Dam 20 at Canton to Lock and Dam 24 at Clarksville.
