Marion County Sheriff’s deputies warn of hazards associated with texting apps.

Detective Tyler Wheeler says his office received a complaint Wednesday involving a juvenile female using the Text Me Now app on her tablet. Wheeler says an unknown male sent a text informing the girl he was on his way to pick her up. The juvenile told her father about the text and he called the number. When contact was made the male told the juvenile female’s father that he was coming to Hannibal. Detective Wheeler says the text was located and the male told not to come. The investigation continues.

Text Me Now apps can be downloaded to a variety of devices with a generic number assigned to the device—even if the device has no calling capabilities. Detective Wheeler says parents should be aware of the capabilities of the electronic devices used by their children.
