A strange earthquake shook south-central Illinois Sunday night and was reportedly felt by hundreds confirmed by the USGS.

According to the USGS earthquake page, this earthquake was centered in south-central Illinois near Waltonville and was recorded at 10:10pm Sunday night, December 17, 2023. In just a matter of minutes, already more than 300 have reported feeling it.

The initial report from the USGS was the quake registered 3.2 on the Richter scale.

UPDATE: The USGS has updated this Illinois quake as a 3.1 magnitude event now.

While this is a much larger than usual quake for this part of Illinois, it's not large enough to cause any real damage. The concern would be if it's a foreshock of a larger quake.
