(Hannibal)—MO 79 south of Hannibal is going to get a 4 million dollar makeover.

Construction begins soon on an eight mile segment from Route T to Route E near Saverton, featuring a concrete overlay and improvements to guardrails and shoulders.  MODot Area Engineer Brian Haeffner says concrete was chosen due to heavy truck traffic in the area.

During construction, a portion of MO79 will only be open to local traffic.  Residents who live and work in the affected area are invited to an open-house style meeting Tuesday at Stowell School from 4:30 until 7.  Officials from MODot and the contractor, Chester Bross Construction, will be on hand to answer questions.

Construction is scheduled to begin July 8th.  Haeffner says construction of the portion of MO 79 near Sawyers Creek and the Mark Twain Cave will put off til last, in order to minimize disruption during their peak tourist season.

The project is expected to be complete in September.
