It was a busy and in some cases tragic weekend on Missouri roads over the Memorial Day weekend as the Missouri State Highway Patrol report hundreds of accidents including at least 7 fatalities over that 3 day holiday period.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol shared in a press release today the preliminary numbers for accidents in the state beginning Friday, May 24 through midnight Monday, May 27, 2024. Here's the big picture of what they encountered:

  • Crashes -- 275
  • Injuries -- 161
  • Fatalities -- 7
  • DWI -- 128

That doesn't even include many boating accidents on Missouri waterways which included the following:

  • Crashes -- 7
  • Injuries -- 7
  • Fatalities -- 0
  • Drowning -- 0
  • BWI -- 6

The Missouri State Highway Patrol mentioned that these numbers are not necessarily final and may be added to as different local law enforcement agencies have different time tables for reporting their Memorial Day weekend accident numbers.

Based on these initial numbers and reports, the accident and fatality numbers for Memorial Day weekend in Missouri seem to be drastically down compared to last year where in 2023, they reported 990 accidents and 13 fatalities. Although even one death is one too many, it's at least a positive note that the weekend on Missouri roads and waters wasn't quite as tragic as last year.
