A central Missouri man has been sentenced to six years in prison for conspiring to have his estranged wife killed.

KOMU-TV reports 34-year-old Michael Gordon, of Fulton, pleaded guilty and was sentenced Monday in Callaway County Circuit Court.

The sheriff's department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol began investigating after getting information that Gordon was trying to find a hit man. A confidential informant told a sheriff's sergeant that Gordon wanted to make his estranged wife's death appear accidental to double the payout on her life insurance policy.

The informant helped put Gordon in touch with an undercover Highway Patrol officer posing as a hit man. Authorities said Gordon gave the officer $40 as a down payment on a $2,000 fee for killing the woman, who was never harmed.
