If you thought Monday was hot, wait until you see the heat index map for Missouri and Illinois for Tuesday. It's led to excessive heat warnings and advisories for nearly all of both states.

The National Weather Service in Saint Louis, Missouri just updated the outlook for Tuesday in both Missouri and Illinois and it looks like the heat index will be peaking even higher than previously expected. This map shows the expected heat index for different areas of Missouri and Illinois and they are all extraordinarily hot.

The heat index could reach 110 or above in some parts of Missouri and Illinois. That's the peak expected for Springfield, Illinois and a heat index of 109 is expected in east-central Missouri between Mexico and Troy.

There could be some relief later in the day as there is a slight chance of a thundershower which could cool temps a little bit briefly, but those are not expected to develop until after the heat index has peaked in both Missouri and Illinois. Still, let's hope for some rain.

The NWS is advising that everyone moderate outdoor activities and pay special attention to any heat stroke symptoms. Staying hydrated will be important for everyone and it's a great idea to check in with friends and family who may not have access to air conditioning or be prone to heat-related issues.
