Electrifying – Slow-Motion Lightning Over St. Louis at 1,500 FPS

It's not easy to take pictures or video of lightning. First of all, it's dangerous since you don't want to be exposed outside and even if you're good with the risk, it takes skills to capture nature at its most brilliant. One very talented photographer was able to show what lightning was like over St. Louis last weekend at 1,500 frames per second and it's truly electrifying - pun intended.

Dan Robinson shared this incredible video taken during the April 15, 2023 storm outbreak that included several tornadoes in the St. Louis, Missouri area. Dan has a special gift for capturing video and explaining lightning. This is unlike any other lightning video you're likely to see.

As Dan stated in his video description "positive cloud-to-ground bolts produce loud sonic-booming thunder as well as trigger simultaneous upward lightning from the towers". He even managed to witness a rare "negative upward flash" hitting a tower.

NOAA has a helpful guide to all the different types of lightning. It seems that Dan Robinson managed to record video of just about every single one that was on display from just one storm.

The National Weather Service has at least 4 confirmed tornadoes in the St. Louis area and even more reports of massive hail that were a part of the April 15, 2023 storms. And to think that Spring has only recently just begun.
