Officials in Iowa have fined a Hannibal business for sending out deceptive mailers.

WGEM reports that the Iowa Attorney General’s office alleges that McAfee and Associates of Hannibal violated the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act and the Older Iowans Act by sending out official-looking mailers with the words, “FREE government benefits” in large print.

The front of the mailers had an illustration of the U.S. Capitol with the words “official business” and “important information about your government benefits.”

Officials say the mailers were sent out to nearly 62,000 Iowans.
The judgment against McAfee and Associates says that the business is barred from sending out material that creates a false impression that the mailer was sent from any government entity or department. McAfee was also fined $5,000.
