After a weekend of torrential rains and oppressive heat, the weeks ahead could follow the same themes -- hot and stormy -- in northeast Missouri and western Illinois.

National Weather Service forecasters say this week starts out hot, with a heat advisory for the area from noon to 8 p.m. Monday. Highs Monday are expected to get to the mid 90s, with heat index values as high as 109. There is also a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms from mid-afternoon Monday through very early Tuesday.

Chances of rain for the rest of the week range from 20 to 40 percent Wednesday night through Friday night and again Saturday night and Sunday.

High temperatures will settle around the 90 degree mark for the week, with lows in the low 70s.
