Over the last two years, Hannibal Police say their Bringing The Heet Initiative has collected 539 pounds of drugs.
Police say most are prescription drugs brought in by the public. Officers encourage you to drop off unused prescription and over the counter medications at the Hannibal Police Department. Bring the unwanted medications to the police department lobby and an officer will be called to assist. No syringes or liquid medications can be accepted. Collection times are from 8 a-m until 4 p-m weekdays.

Prescription drugs are sometimes sold illegally creating another avenue toward addiction and criminal activity.

Police say proper disposal of unwanted medications is important to prevent abuse that can evolve into people seeking out illegal street drugs such as heroin. There are also environmental concerns if unwanted medications are flushed down the toilet or poured into the sink. That can release toxins into drinking water and soil.
