Groundbreaking ceremonies early Friday afternoon mark another step toward a
new Adams County Jail.
Site clearing and preparation work on the site just east of the current
Adams County Courthouse began earlier this year. Adams County Sheriff Brian VonderHaar thanked county and city government officials and private citizens who have worked to get the jail project moving. Work on the 196 bed facility is expected to be complete in a couple years. Site clearing work was slowed by an archaeological survey of a 19th century cemetery on the courthouse grounds. Remains of  one female were found and moved. Eight grave sites that were emptied prior to earlier construction
on that block were also found. A nod toward that archaeological work came with plastic bones in the ground that popped out of the ground as the ceremonial dirt was turned.
