Cantaloupe in Missouri Suddenly Recalled for Fatal Infection Risk
I was always told by my parents that fruit was good for me. That's true, but this is one case that I'm not taking my chances. Cantaloupe in Missouri is now under and urgent recall as it has the potential to have a fatal infection risk.
This bulletin from the Food and Drug Administration addresses cantaloupe that were specifically distributed in Missouri between August 13 and August 17. There are 224 cases of whole cantaloupe from Eagle Produce LLC that have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
Retail stores in Missouri, Michigan, Ohio, Texas and Virginia had this cantaloupe which had this label on them.
It was an inspection in Michigan where Salmonella was detected the the FDA says the company is fully cooperating with the recall.
The FDA says Salmonella can result in "serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems".
The good news is there are no direct reports of illness connected with this cantaloupe which was available in Missouri at the time of this writing.
As this is a developing story, it will be updated once new information is available.
