Urgent Recall of Fruit Linked to 2 Deaths Now Includes Missouri

An outbreak that was already considered bad has now gotten worse. An urgent recall of fruit that has been linked to numerous hospitalizations including 2 deaths has now been expanded to include fruit available in Missouri.

This new bulletin from the Food and Drug Administration that previously just included Illinois and a handful of other states now includes 17 others including Missouri. 99 people have been sickened by this outbreak of Salmonella and now the CDC says 9 live in Missouri. The Salmonella is connected to cantaloupe.

As you can see by the map shared, the Salmonella outbreak in Missouri has now surpassed what was previously known about the sickness in Illinois.

The CDC says that the cantaloupe in question in Illinois was available at a number of Aldi stores. The whole cantaloupe in Missouri "might have a sticker that says “Malichita” or “Rudy,” with the number “4050”, and “Product of Mexico/produit du Mexique”.

What is Salmonella and why is it serious?

The CDC says that Salmonella "diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps...Symptoms usually begin six hours to six days after infection and last four to seven days". Most will not develop serious symptoms, but those in danger are the very young, elderly and/or those with weakened immune systems.
