Just because someone claims to be a US Marshals does not make them one. The real US Marshals are warning Missouri residents there are currently fake agents spoofing them trying to rip them off.

The true US Marshals issued an alarming press release this week alerting Missouri residents of a current scam where villains are pretending to be them in an effort to intimidate people into giving them money. Their methods are insidious.

The Marshals say that the fake agents will use phone spoofing to make their number appear to come from "friends, local businesses, and this case, law enforcement". Your caller ID or smartphone might actually show an incoming call that looks like it's coming from a local US Marshals office.

“Our office has received numerous inquiries about phone calls from the U.S. Marshals seeking mandatory payment or go to jail,” U.S. Marshal Enix Smith said.

The bulletin says "U.S. Marshals WILL NEVER ask for credit/debit card/gift card numbers, wire transfers, or bank routing numbers for any purpose."

If you receive one of these calls in Missouri, you can submit a report and even do so anonymously if you prefer. Those reports can go to the FBI in St. Louis or the FBI in Kansas City. If someone is trying to victimize you, then they'll try to victimize someone else. If you file a report and they are caught, you might save someone else from being ripped off.
