(MONROE CITY)—A collision between a car and a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train in Monroe City at 11:40 Friday morning results in a trip to the hospital for two Monroe City residents. The Missouri Highway Patrol says a car driven by 84 year old Robert Shoemaker of Monroe City failed to yield at the crossing on South Washington. Troopers say the flashing lights and signal bells at the crossing were functioning. Shoemaker sustained minor injuries. A passenger—47 year old Michelle Long of Monroe City sustained moderate injuries. Both were taken to Hannibal Regional Hospital for treatment. The engineer—33 year old Grant Thornburg of Marceline was not injured.
