St. Louis police say a man is charged in the death of a 9-year-old boy who was shot while he rode in a vehicle with family members.

Prosecutors on Wednesday charged 22-year-old Marquan D. Bland, of St. Louis, with first-degree murder, three counts of first-degree assault and six other counts.

He is accused of killing Tyrese Short on July 10, when several shots were fired into a sports utility vehicle the child was in. Police have said they believe Tyrese's father and the driver of the car were the shooters' intended targets.

Bland is being held in the city jail on charges unrelated to the shooting. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney.
