School safety training in Hannibal is an ongoing process in this age of violence on school campuses.Hannibal Police Chief Lyndell Davis says there is a close relationship between Hannibal Public Schools and HPD. Davis received city council approval to add a third SRO (School Resource Officer), pending approval by the school board. The addition will have not increase the police budget, as an existing officer will be assigned. In fact, Davis says the school system picks up half of the officer’s base salary.

Chief Davis says school faculty and middle-school and high school students recently completed an active-shooter training course known as ALICE. Officers complete active shooter training twice a year. Davis says should a violent incident occur, he believes his officers are well prepared.
