The mural titled, “Focus,” was created by Quincy artist Jennifer Bock-Nelson. The abstract image is from Bock-Nelson’s “Drive” series which she describes here: “There’s something about the transitional space of being in a car and the beautiful things that happen with the natural light as it changes and the artificial lights coming from streetlights or cars or signs.” Artists Jacqueline Kaufman Wood, Lana Rabe and Amber Nicole Smith assisted with the mural.

The mural is being dedicated to Pat Surface, the late founder of the Midsummer Arts Faire.

A committee consisting of Maggie Strong representing the Midsummer Arts Faire, Travis Brown, Executive Director of the Historic Quincy Business District and Jen Teter with the Quincy Art Center, met for months to choose a location and artist for the first of what they hope will be more murals and public art projects in downtown Quincy.

“We chose the building at 115 North 4th Street because its location on Highway 24 serves as the unofficial gateway to our community,” says Maggie Strong. “Thousands of vehicles pass by the wall each day and we’re eager to grab the attention of those drivers. Quincy is a great arts community and this mural will demonstrate that to not only our citizens, but also visitors.”

The project was a true community and grassroots effort and would not have been possible without our sponsors. Major sponsors include: Blessing Health System and the City of Quincy Arts Fund. Other sponsors include: The Great River Economic Development Foundation, Historic Quincy Business District, Oakley-Lindsay Foundation, Quincy Art Center, Quincy Medical Group, Midsummer Arts Faire, Rupp Masonry & Rupp Rental, Anticipation and owners Isaac and Kristina Miller, Austin Properties, Entrup Drywall & Painting, Heritage Painting & Restoration, Bank of Springfield, Bank of Quincy and John & Lani Schneider.

The 10th Annual Midsummer Arts Faire will take place Friday, June 28 through Sunday, June 30, in downtown Quincy’s Washington Park. Hours are Friday 5 - 9pm, Saturday 10am - 5pm and Sunday 11am - 4pm.
