Pike County, IL Sheriff Warns of Facebook Scam

Law enforcement officials in Pike County, Illinois warn of a new Facebook scam.

According to Sheriff Paul Petty, scam artists are cloning Facebook accounts and messaging people on your friends list.

A local resident told authorities Monday that she was contacted by someone she believed to be a Facebook friend.

The supposed friend told the victim her name was on a published list to receive money and other benefits through the Federal Government Department of Worker’s Compensation Appeals Board and the Department of Health and Human Services.

As a result, the victim sent money to an address in California.

Law enforcement authorities in California and the Illinois Attorney General’s office have been contacted about the scam.
