Pike County Illinois’ long time sheriff is stepping down when his current term ends next year.

Paul Petty says he will not seek reelection for a sixth term as sheriff in 2018.

Petty, a Pittsfield native, came to the sheriff’s department as a deputy under Sheriff Mike Lord in 1995. Petty ran for sheriff when Lord decided not to run for reelection in 1998.

Petty says he’s ready for another career in law enforcement that will enable him to spend more time with his family.
