The probable cause statement filed by Hannibal Police in connection with a Monday stabbing incident has been made public.

Officers found a man near 7th and Broadway Monday morning with a stab wound. The man told officers that his girlfriend, Brenda Watkins, had accidentally stabbed him.

Watkins was arrested and charged with assault and armed criminal action.

She reportedly told police that the couple had been using meth the day before and had been fighting. Watkins said the man had her in a choke hold and she couldn’t breathe. She then grabbed a multi-tool knife and started stabbing him until he let go.

The man was taken to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis for treatment. Hannibal Police are not providing updates on his condition.

Watkins is in the Marion County Jail on $50,000 cash only bond. She is set to be arraigned Friday in Marion County Circuit Court.
