Insidious New Text Scam in Missouri Teases Voter Registration
Leave it to opportunists to attempt to take advantage of the upcoming election to try and rob innocent people. There's a new warning in Missouri that involves a text being sent to many that pretends to encourage voter registration, but it's an insidious scam.
I've seen friends share this and there are official warnings from many Missouri sources including Washington University in St. Louis. The perpetrators send a text asking you to follow a link to make sure that you and/or your partner are officially registered to vote. If you follow their directions, they'll steal your money and possibly even your identity.
Here's how you can verify that you're registered to vote in Missouri. The Missouri Secretary of State's website allows you to quickly and safely make sure that you're registered to vote. That's it. You will NEVER receive a text from the state of Missouri asking you to input personal information and that's especially true when it comes to voting. Note that you need to input your exact information for Missouri's website to be able to make sure you're ready for voting in November.
It's a good practice to never ever follow a text link sent to you by anyone (even a known acquaintance) that you didn't ask for or expect. Scammers can even pose as friends or family in an attempt to steal your money and/or information.
