Hospitalizations in Missouri & Illinois for Cucumber Sicknesses

We've seen many recalls already this year that were done out of caution, but no sicknesses happened as a direct result. Sadly, that's not the case with the cucumber outbreak as it's now been confirmed that individuals in Missouri and Illinois have been hospitalized as a result of contaminated cucumbers.

The CDC just shared results of an investigation into potential Salmonella contamination of cucumbers and learned that there have been a staggering 185 illnesses in 24 states. Those sicknesses have resulted in hospitalizations in several states also and their map confirms Missouri and Illinois were among them.

The Salmonella outbreak doesn't appear to be over yet either. As I have been writing this, another 11 cases have just been added by the CDC bringing the total number of sicknesses to 196 now.

This urgent recall began when the CDC learned that cucumbers sold in bulk in 24- and 32-count boxes directly to retail distribution centers, wholesalers, and food service distributors had tested positive for Salmonella contamination.

The Mayo Clinic shared symptoms to watch for that may indicate Salmonella infection:

• Diarrhea
• Stomach (abdominal) cramps
• Fever
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Chills
• Headache
• Blood in the stool
