Marion County Sheriff Warns of Business Email Scam
The Marion County Sheriff’s Department wants to make local businesses aware of an email scam making the rounds.
Sergeant Brock Decker of the sheriff’s office reports that a couple of local businesses have recently received fraudulent emails requesting an employee’s direct deposit be adjusted.
The suspect poses as a company employee, using an email address that may appear to be from the actual company.
The email requests that the employees’ bank routing number be changed.
Authorities believe the changed routing numbers are funneling money out of the country.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Department has joined the FBI to investigate these attempted scams.
Authorities urge businesses to be caution with these types of requests and communicate with employees to verify the process.
If you think you may have been the victim of such a scam, you’re asked to contact your local law enforcement agency.
