This is strange and even scientists don't fully understand exactly how it happened, but a superbug outbreak from eyedrops available in Illinois has now somehow spread to dogs.

The original Food and Drug Administration recall of Global Pharma Healthcare eyedrops dates back to the beginning of February. These eyedrops available in Illinois and other states also involved contamination with a highly drug-resistant virus that was so terrible it resulted in 14 people going blind and 4 individuals who had to have eyeballs removed.

Ars Technica is now reporting that this same virus has now been detected in dogs. CBS News has confirmed this is true including at least 2 dogs in New Jersey that have now been admitted to veterinary clinics.

The question is how in the world did dogs get infected with a deadly virus that originated in eye drops that they have no known connection to? It is not unheard of for some eyedrops to be used on dogs with certain conditions.

This new outbreak and unusual spread of this frightening virus is one reason why it's now on the CDC watch list for potential major problems in the future. Viruses that can spread from one specie to another with few known connections are obviously something to be concerned about. Hopefully these human and dog cases will remain isolated and not become a widespread crisis.
