Investigators Seek Couple in Kansas City Area For Vehicle Fraud

Investigators are looking for a couple in the Kansas City metropolitan area who are believed to be purchasing automobiles on Craigslist, altering the mileage reading and reselling the vehicles on the same website.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the couple have made roughly 48 such purchases or sales within the past year, usually on the Craigslist auction site. Spokesman Collin Stosberg says it's possible not all transactions involve an odometer rollback, and it doesn't appear any of the buyers or sellers have been involved in the scheme.

Stosberg says the two pose as the previous owners of the vehicle, don't use their names during transactions and typically use pre-paid cell phones.

He says the woman usually stays in a green minivan with their children while the transactions are conducted.
