A prominent Hannibal businessman and former chairman of the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission is to have a stretch of Highway 61 named in his honor.

Acting on a designation requested by State Representative Lindell Shumake, Governor Jay Nixon Friday signed a bill designating that 61 between Marion County Road 407 and Warren Barrett Drive would become known as Tom Boland Highway.

According to Shumake, Boland is being honored for his nearly half-century as a local businessman, along with a nearly 40 year involvement in transportation issues, including development of the Highway 36/Interstate 72 corridor, the Avenue of the Saints and the Chicago-Kansas City Expressway.

The stretch of 61 through Hannibal officially becomes Tom Boland Highway August 28th.
