(Hannibal)—The Hannibal Police Department is offering a free service to help battle the problem of prescription drug abuse.

Sergeant Darren DeLaPorte says upcoming Drug Take-Back events are a safe, anonymous method to dispose of unwanted medications. In addition to pills, inhalers are also accepted. The one category  that will NOT be accepted is needles or sharps.

Hannibal Regional Hospital hosts the first event October 16 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The second one takes place October 26 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at County Market Pharmacy on Diamond Boulevard.

DeLaPorte says removal of prescription labels is optional…

Questions on the prescription drug take back program can be directed to Sgt. DeLaPorte at 573-221-0987, extension 270.

A national Drug Take-Back event last April saw Americans turn in over 371 tons of prescription drugs at over 5,800 sites operated by the DEA and thousands of state and local law enforcement partners.
