In this third installment of Dates We Remember, we get personal.

It was August 22, 1969 that my younger brothers, Russell and Steven Smith, drowned while wading in the Hadley Creek diversion channel between Kinderhook and Hull.

At the time, their deaths were contrasted with the disappearance of the two boys in the Hannibal area about three years before. Those boys were never found, while Rusty and Steve were found and there was some measure of closure for our family.

I promise a happier date to remember next time.
