A crane being carried by a tow boat struck the Hannibal railroad bridge early Thursday morning.

Officials with Norfolk Southern Corporation and the U.S. Coast Guard report the bridge was struck around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

Experts are being brought in by Norfolk Southern to assess the damage to the bridge. A spokesperson says the incident caused unknown mechanical and electrical damage to the bridge.

As of midday Thursday, the bridge was down and locked in place and was closed to train and vessel traffic.

No injuries were reported.
